Why Wrinkles Are an Inflammatory Process, Not Just a Sign of Aging

Wrinkles are often thought of as an inevitable part of getting older, but the biology of skin aging tells a different story. Wrinkle formation is driven by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and structural breakdown within the skin, processes that begin long before lines are visible on the surface¹.

The Molecular Drivers of Skin Aging

At the cellular level, skin aging is influenced by several overlapping mechanisms:

Collagen, Elastin, and Structural Integrity

Collagen provides the structural framework of the skin, while elastin allows the skin to stretch and return to shape. With aging and UV exposure, enzymes such as collagenase and elastase become more active, breaking down these proteins faster than the body can replace them³.

As collagen density decreases and elastin fibers degrade, the skin loses firmness and resilience, leading to sagging, fine lines, and deeper wrinkles³.

 

Inflammation and Enzyme Activation

UV-induced inflammation activates matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes that accelerate collagen and elastin breakdown². These enzymes remain active even after redness resolves, meaning damage continues beneath the surface long after sun exposure ends.

Over time, repeated exposure creates cumulative structural damage that becomes increasingly difficult to reverse.
